Headquarter klimaaktiv

Since 2011, the Ecoport in Feldkirchen near Graz has not only been Saubermacher's headquarters, but above all a building that sets new standards. Built according to strict ecological and economic criteria, it is one of the first office buildings to be klimaaktiv certified. With the criteria of the klimaaktiv building standard, the quality of a building can be made measurable and assessed in a comparable way.

Solar power plants

Saubermacher lives sustainability in all its facets and relies on the power of the sun to provide energy. The company operates PV systems at 6 locations with a total output of 2,250 kWp. This produces around 2,250,000 kWh/a of electricity, which covers around 16% of the company's own requirements.

At Saubermacher, all sites throughout Austria are already supplied with 100 per cent green electricity. The company relies on the power of the sun and operates PV systems with a total output of 2,250 kWp at 6 locations. This produces around 2,250,000 kWh/a of in-house electricity, which covers around 16% of the company's own requirements. This rate is set to rise to 30 per cent by 2030.

E-charging infrastructure

Saubermacher has installed over 70 charging points at 13 locations. In 2023, the company charged around 230,000 kWh of electricity at these points. The largest charging park is located at the Ecoport headquarters with 43 AC charging points. As the electric cars are charged almost exclusively during the day during operating hours, the company's own PV power is used here for the most part. The system is controlled by a load management system that enables the available electricity capacity to be optimally distributed. A 2nd Life battery storage system is also integrated into this system.

Stationary energy storage

Saubermacher is giving e-car batteries a second life and using them as stationary power storage units. Together with AVL, Energie Steiermark, the Graz Energy Agency and Smart Power, the waste management company has set up a pilot plant designed to cover peak loads. The total output is 100 kW. 96 kWh can be accessed. To achieve this volume, 2 x 32 battery modules were connected in series. At the company headquarters in Feldkirchen near Graz, the system optimises the company's own electricity consumption from the photovoltaic system. It is mainly used at night and to support the charging infrastructure on site. With the battery storage system, around 20,000 kWh of PV electricity can be stored and additionally utilised at the site each year.

Sustainable vehicle fleet

In order to reduce CO₂ emissions, Saubermacher is gradually switching its fleet to climate-friendly vehicles. The company already has over 70 electric cars in its fleet. Across Austria, 45 per cent of Saubermacher's lorries are already powered by HVO diesel. This corresponds to CO₂ savings of up to 90 per cent per year compared to conventional fuel. Saubermacher also has 7 e-trucks, a 3.5 tonne electric transporter and 24 electrically powered work machines in use. The aim is to make all waste transport emission-free by 2040.
